What to watch during and after

If a faucet slows to a trickle during a hard freeze, a line is freezing upstream — open the tap and warm that area immediately. After the thaw, walk the house before turning anything back to full pressure: look for damp drywall, listen for hissing in walls, and check the attic and crawlspace with a flashlight. A split found in the first hour is a repair; found in the second day, it's a plumbing.

Shut the main off first — every minute matters. Kill power to any wet area if you can reach the panel safely. Then call. A local plumber can find the split, repair the line, and check the runs that nearly failed, because the pipe that bursts is rarely the only one that froze.
